Experimentation, Metamorphosis, Transcendence
UNITED KINGDOM, Iran | 73 minutes | 2019
The body of artist Mania Akbari serves as the inspiration for an artwork both performative and sculptural. Ravaged by a double mastectomy and subsequently transformed through the stages of an IVF pregnancy, her body becomes her muse, a metaphor for the political history of her native Iran. Life, death, the language of the imagination and censorship are explored through trauma both personal and collective. Powerful and deeply intimate, this lyrical essay is loosely built on the exchange of letters between two artists — Akbari and her partner Douglas White — as they contemplate what is happening to them now.NORTH AMERICAN PREMIEREIn collaboration with RIDM."Mania Akbari reaches for the sublime with a dreamlike film that tries to join the dots between past and present. form of digressive-poetic cinema, connecting images and ideas in a dream-associative logic."
