Contrasting visions of world cinema
GERMANY | 80 minutes | 2019
In this utterly one-off début feature, Susanne Heinrich’s archetypal “melancholy girl” wanders the city in search of shelter. Po-faced and pensive, she engages in conversations with strangers in a series of encounters, lust-fuelled or otherwise. Over the course of 15 deadpan vignettes of varying degrees of absurdity, she tries to find herself in a world where nothing stays the same. Maternity, sexuality, coupledom and social conventions: Aren’t You Happy? is an existentialist comedy whose feminist discourse, offbeat, postmodern and fiercely of-the-moment, is served up as delectably kittenish kitsch.CANADIAN PREMIERE"Melancholy is a recurring theme, and yet this picture, with its playful sound design and uninhibited embrace of camp imagery, leaves an overriding sense of joy and mischief."
