Leading experts in the field share their expertise and the work process involved with composing music for films.
Mathieu Denis is a Montreal-based filmmaker. He first wrote and directed two short fiction films: Le silence fera nous écho (2006) and Code 13 (2008). Three feature films seen and awarded throughout the world followed: Laurentie (2011), Corbo (2014) and Ceux qui font les révolutions à moitié n’ont fait que se creuser un tombeau (2017). He is currently preparing his next film, which will be shot in 2020.
Olivier Alary is a French composer based in Montreal, who recorded many albums, as well as composing films and installations of contemporary art. Since 2000, he has collaborated with Björk, Cat Power, Nick Knight, Doug Aitken, Monia Chokri, Olivia Newman, Yung Chang, Maxime Giroux, the NFB and the Centre Pompidou among others.Over the past ten years, he has composed the music for more than 40 feature films and documentaries, some of which have received prestigious awards and screenings in Europe, the United States and Asia. (Cannes, TIFF, Sundance, Berlinale, Locarno, Rotterdam, IDFA, etc.)Currently, Olivier is developing instrumental pieces exploring the intersection of electronic music and post-tone. Part of this research will soon be published on the label 130701, record company of Max Richter, Johann Johann Johannsson among others.
To Anik Salas, directing is a commitment, a claim that appears in different expression forms. Her debut film The War of the Blueberries won a Gold Remi Award and has been released in 13 theaters in Quebec, playing also in festivals throughout Europe and the United States. As Thou Urgest Justice, her film based on the work of Shakespeare, was presented in London as part of the celebrations of the anniversary of the death of the playwright.
MODERATORPhilippe Béland holds a doctoral degree in composition from the Université de Montréal and has hosted the Podcast Qu'est-ce qui se trame on CISM 89.3 FM since 2016, which focuses on music in film.
Stephanie Hamelin Tomala is a composer, violinist, pianist and singer armed with a mentorship with Oscar winner composer Stephen Warbeck that took place in 2018 as part of the program Music for the Image of the Aubagne Festival, as well as mentorship with Christophe Beck (Ant-man, Frozen). In January 2019 she won first prize from the important competition SmackDown string quartet held in Texas. She recently worked on the musical arrangements for the tribute album to Charles Aznavour produced by Mario Pelchat. She also won 2 first prizes for her music score composed for the American film Final Curtain, directed by Jonathan Chiarle ; one from the SOCAN Foundation and the other from the Burbank International Film Festival, held in California. Stephanie also received 3rd prize from the SOCAN Foundation for her music for the animated film Orboros. Stéphanie has written music for more than 60 short films, two documentary feature films as well as the music series of le Project Sterone. As a last news, the album produced by Mario Pelchat; Les Prêtres, for which she made musical arrangements, is nominated at the 2019 ADISQ Gala in the category Album of the Year-Reinterpretation.
